Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) received vital education on mental health as the Service’s Psychology Department organized a Mental Health Awareness Program at the GIS Conference Room.

The initiative, brought together expert resource persons to address pressing issues of mental health, addiction, depression, and practical strategies for sustaining psychological well-being among officers.

Delivering the opening remarks, the Head of Welfare, DCOI Smart Osei Bonsu, speaking of behalf of the Comptroller General of Immigration, highlighted the critical importance of mental health in the workplace, reassuring officers that the GIS Psychiatric Unit stands ready to provide the professional support they need.

Madam Hannah Oye Afriyie, a Clinical Health Psychologist, delivered an insightful address on mental health and addiction, shedding light on the often-overlooked psychological pressures that professionals in high-demand roles face. Her presentation set the stage for Madam Rosemond of the Mother and Child Clinic, who shifted the program into an engaging, hands-on session of stress-relief and relaxation exercises — giving participants practical tools they could immediately incorporate into their daily routines.

Rounding off the presentations, Madam Josephine Stiles Darko of the Psychiatric Association of Ghana offered a comprehensive breakdown of depression, its warning signs, symptoms, and available treatment pathways — empowering officers to identify the condition in themselves and in colleagues.

The program was lauded for its informative and interactive nature, equipping GIS officers with the awareness and confidence to prioritize their mental health and to seek help without hesitation when the need arises. Story By: AICO II Emerald Oteng Afrakoma
